M1 Widening

Objection Letter - bullet points Submitted by: Jim on Jun 20, 2006

Reason for the letter

State the reason(s) however obvious to you, why you object to the proposed works

Your concerns

Highlight issues, the impact to you, your neighbours and the environment, pollution – noise & light, the costs of the works against the benifits , the long term blight to your property

Highlight your understanding of the reasons for the proposal works
The need for traffic relief at junction 21,
The reasons for the current problems i.e.; lack of investment by the current & previous governments and councils to give the population an alternative to the private motor vehicle.
Local commuters, with driver only vehicles junction hopping due to lack of alternatives to the car
The Highways Agency appear adamant that traffic should run at 70mph at all times.

Reasons against the proposal
No consideration of the amount of passengers contained in the vehicles passing through the section.
The M1 is usually free flowing except for ‘certain periods’ of the day and school holidays.
No alternatives given to prove the proposed route is the most cost effective
The HA model traffic will increase by XX amount vehicles over a period of XX years, little point in throwing good money after bad without addressing alternatives ie public transport
The high percentage of traffic through this section during rush hour is drawn through the area to avoid urban traffic, local commuters junction hopping.
Major road works on the A47 and construction of new M1 bridge
Construction of an elevated two lane flyover & hard shoulder to motorway standard
Flyover with illumination creating severe light pollution
Noise barriers on an elevated section would be ineffective
Destroying natural habitat for wildlife across open fields that may contain as yet undiscovered abandoned medieval villages or churches
Isolating a section of fields by a motorway triangle
Blight for home owner over along period of time due to the timescale to finish
Eight lanes of traffic in close proximity to homes
Cost of construction of x amount of bridges
Removing the majority of embankments and through the LFE area losing any natural noise reducing qualities they may offer.

Offering Alternatives
A reduction in speed will allow for more smooth transition of traffic through the section rather than faster stop / start traffic. Variable speed limits need to be considered its all very well have a 12-lane motorway through the parish when 18 hours out of the day only four are used
Land owned by the Highways Agency (land registry confirmed) available to the South of the motorway service area as a viable alternative site for a direct link to the M69 with huge cost savings and well away from any residential area and constructed without effecting current road system
Relocating the Motorway Service Area to south of junction 21, removing the current need for services access / egress for traffic
Separating M1 traffic from M69 creating a new junction
Tunnel rather than bridge a link (benefits would include no visual intrusion - and noise pollution) if they can build the channel tunnel by bore and fill then a section of motorway would be easy.
