A New Club For Young People Submitted by: Jim on Aug 25, 2006

Some of us are trying to set up a voluntary non-sectarian club for young people in the 11-13 age group. A public meeting will take place (with a circus skills workshop), on Tuesday 19th September 7.00pm to 9.00pm at the Scout Hut, rear of St. Andrew's Church.
We have the use of the Scout building behind St. Andrew's Church, Hinckley Road, LFE for one evening a week to start with. There are 4 or 5 people interested in becoming leaders.

We have a secretary and a treasurer (if they are approved by the committee) and possibly a chairperson too. We need people to who are willing to become committee members and make decisions.
We also need people who will run short courses/events/activities with the young people on club nights as well as people to help out on the club nights perhaps helping with the refreshments preparation or joining in a game.

Conversations have taken place with a number of organisations about possible grants for the club to help buy equipment and generally set the whole thing up. Conversations have also taken place with representatives of organisations, which will give advice and help, to which the club might affiliate.

They will help in obtaining of CRB clearance, which will be a requirement for adults involved with the club. CRB clearance is in the main quite painless and free.
The Parish Plan survey of last year made it clear that people thought that there was insufficient provision made within the parish for the 11 to 14 and the 15+ age groups.

According to the updated information from the 2001 Census there are around 555 people of this age group within LFE. Because there is a club meeting in the parish hall on a Monday evening for 13+ youngsters we decided to make provision for the younger age group of 11 to 13 years (school years 6 to 8).

I am very keen to hear from young people in the 11 to 13 age group to find out what they think about a club for them. What would they like the club to do for them and what would they do for the club? What equipment would they like to see there? Perhaps club members would like to be part of the organisation had have a place on the committee.

Please make contact on lfeypcinfo@tiscali.co.uk with your ideas and comments.

Finally, at the moment we do have a place to meet but no games or activities. If you have some equipment that you would be willing to donate to us such as a table tennis table, snooker table of nearly full size, board games with almost all their equipment there then again please get in touch with me.
