Recycling Plant - Sunningdale Road near Meynells
Gorse Submitted by: Jim on Jun 29, 2006
A councillor has said an industrial site in his ward is not
the right place for a planned recycling plant.
If it goes ahead, the plant, in Sunningdale Road, near the
Meynells Gorse park and ride, in Braunstone Frith, would be
one of two in the city. It could process up to 250,000 tonnes
of building waste each year.
A smaller plant is already running in Ulverscroft Road, just
north of the city centre.
Supporters say the plants are needed to deal with thousands
of tonnes of rubble produced during the city's regeneration.
A consultant's report said Sunningdale Road was more than
160 yards from the nearest homes, in Ratby Lane. jim: so that's
alright then
City councillor John Blackmore, whose New Parks constituency
includes Sunningdale Road, fears homes could be affected by
noise, dust and traffic.
He said: "We do need to recycle more building waste
but my reservations are the amount of waste, what the pollution
would be and how many lorries there would be.
"I'm still not convinced the road infrastructure is
suitable. jim:: rocket science ?
"Although I do not want to be a Nimby, I would like
this to be looked at seriously. There have got to be other
options." jim:: it appears there aren't
City regeneration spokesman Coun John Mugglestone said Leicester
needed sites for crushing demolition waste rather than dumping
it as landfill.
He works for a company which makes stone crushers and said
what was planned was an environmental way of disposing of
buildings and old concrete.
He said if steps were taken to limit noise and dust, both
the Sunningdale and Ulverscroft Road sites should be welcomed.
jim: by whom
He said: "I know about these machines and it can be
an environmentally friendly way of getting rid of demolition
waste." jim: and helpful to company profits I guess
Vic Burgess, director of AE Burgess and Sons scrap metal
merchants, which runs the Ulverscroft Road site, said half
that area was dedicated to reprocessing soil and aggregates.
He said: "It's been like that a year and we have had
no problems with noise or anything."
