After Huntingdon the focus was decision making, discipline
and playing as a team.
The game plan was made simple, 10 man rugby. It's a bit strange
to say this to a team that loves throwing the ball about, but
with only two regular first team backs we didn't want the boys
stepping in to feel pressurized.
Right from the kick off the team stuck to the game plan and
were rewarded with a push over try from Screwy Driver. From
there the lads kept plugging away with mistake free rugby. John
Roux added a penalty and drop goal to extend the lead.
Ten minutes left to go in the first half and Forest tried to
force the issue instead of plugging away, resulting in giving
away ten penalties in a row! This gave Daventry a sniff. Lucky
for Forest Daventry didn't score and Roux slotted another penalty
to make it 16 nil.
Half time bought the first substitute with Screwy being replaced
by Ben Davis; who has returned to the team after the summer
holidays. This was good for the team as he scored three tries
with the credit for two going to the tight five with two more
push over scrums.
Twenty minutes to go and Daventry finally got some ball and
tried to use their backs, but the inside back combination of
Roux, Tony Holland and Stu Clark stood strong. Added assistance
from wingers Glynn Johnson and Jake Grimsdale complimented this.
Daventry did manage to score a good team try but were quickly
answered with another Davies try.
All in all a good day at the office. The team played as a team
and team moral is high, but we know we have a tough trip to
bugbrooke this week.
Congratulations to young front rower Liam Warren for his first,
First Team debut.
